Taiwans Whale-Sized Skimmer to Gulf Coast Rescue, Obama Ranked High as 15th Prez - News Headlines 2 July 2010

*** Behemoth sized skimmer ship created just for oil spill clean up is impressive. Check out Obama's rankings compared to past presidents.

Taiwan's The Whale, the largest oil skimmer in the world, arrives in the Gulf

From Denny: There's a new behemoth in town, a 10-story and almost four football fields long retro-fitted ship from Taiwan sailing in the Gulf of Mexico at the moment. The vessel has been nicknamed "The Whale." It's the largest oil skimmer ever created in the world. It's so large it needs at least a one-half mile berth around it while it cruises in the Gulf.

Currently, the vessel, a retro-fitted oil tanker, is awaiting permission from the Coast Guard to begin its skimming operation. The Coast Guard is assessing how the discharged water that is separated from the oil may impact the Gulf eco-system. The Whale is now cruising a 25-mile-square mile test site over the weekend.

Everyone is practically holding their breath in the hopes this giant skimmer lives up to its expectations and claims. It's capacity for processing is claimed at 21 million gallons of oil spilled water a day. The ship processes the fouled water by taking in water through 12 vents on the bottom level of the ship, then separates the oil from the water and pumps the cleaned sea water back into the Gulf. At least that's the plan. This has never been done and everyone is eager to see it a success.

"In many ways, the ship collects water like an actual whale and pumps internally like a human heart," TMT spokesman Bob Grantham said.

The reason The Whale is so close to the well head is because officials think it will be most effective where the oil is the thickest. Also, it just makes sense to clean up the oil closest to the leaking area rather than wait until it dissipates over million of acres of ocean and lands on shore.

The Whale arrived in the Gulf on Wednesday. Officials are testing its capability and the EPA must sign off on deciding if the water is clean enough to discharge back into the Gulf. Apparently, it is not a perfect process. The cleaned sea water still contains trace amounts of crude oil.

Louisiana officials are frustrated the huge ship was not put to work immediately as they see their marshlands clogged with oil. Once the marsh grasses start dying off what happens is that the land sinks never to return. Then Louisiana loses habitat for wildlife as well as barrier island protection from severe hurricanes. People in Louisiana hope this mammoth ship will prove to be a game-changer for this war on the oil spill effects.

The world's largest oil skimmer hails from Taiwan where they just retro-fitted an oil tanker just for this project:

Meanwhile, BP continues to play games with those of us who want them to stop with the gigantic science experiment in the Gulf: excessive use of dispersant. The whole point of using dispersant from BP's point of view is to force the oil down under the surface where it cannot be easily seen. It's their nightmare public relations problem. Shame on them for thinking only of themselves. Dispersant forces the oil down to the mid and lowest levels of the ocean, killing off every living thing. It's like nothing can swim underwater to get away from the oil spill. There is pollution everywhere on every level.

BP continues to lie about huge amounts of dispersant used on the oil spill:

Here's an interesting story about how President Obama is ranked in relation to the other Presidents. He has only been in office a mere 18 months and is already ranked as high as 15th. Clinton is listed as 13th, Ronald Reagan as 18th and George Bush 43 is listed in the bottom five - no surprises there.

The Survey of U.S. Presidents was conducted by the Sienna College Research Institute. They have done five surveys since 1982, asking 328 Presidential scholars to rank the 44 U.S. Presidents on a number of characteristics.

6 personal attributes:

background
imagination
integrity
intelligence
luck
willingness to take risks

5 forms of ability:

compromising
executive
leadership
communication
overall

8 areas of accomplishment:

economic
other domestic affairs
working with Congress
party leadership
Supreme Court appointments
executive branch appointments
avoiding mistakes
foreign policy

Who was ranked as the best President ever?

1. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
2. Theodore Roosevelt
3. Abraham Lincoln
4. George Washington
5. Thomas Jefferson.

For his first year in office, President Obama was rated highly in these areas: imagination, communication and intelligence.

How did George Bush 43 fare? In 2002, after his first year in office, he was rated as 23rd. Since then? Bush was drop kicked to the bottom of the pile to rank 39th. He received poor ratings for communication, foreign policy, intelligence, the economy and his ability to compromise. Bush's best ranking was in the category of "luck" where he was considered the 18th best president.

Who could actually be worse than Bush? Staring up from the bottom of the cellar were Andrew Johnson, James Buchanan, Warren G. Harding, and Franklin Pierce.

Kagan Takes Hits From GOP For Not Being Christian Enough - News Headlines 1 July 2010

*** Greed Over Principle Republicans scorn Elena Kagan for being a Jew at Supreme Court nominee hearings.

Supreme Court nominee hearings for Elena Kagan

From Denny: Elena Kagan has conducted herself quite well considering the snake pit into which her short little legs walked. Nonplussed, she sat herself down, practically dangling her legs off the chair, and proceeded to take all comers in the political drama onslaught. The woman is a warrior with a good sense of humor as a character plus.

She basically walked the same talking lines as now Chief Justice Roberts had been instructed to do by his Republican handlers. So, shame on the Republicans if they are fit to be tied angry that she took their lead and mirrored their game plan.

The GOP really looked bad, doing their usual KKK style stomp dance on the head of a woman. The worst came when bigoted South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham repeatedly asked Kagan exactly where she was on Christmas Day when the shoe bomber was caught like it was as important to know like remembering where you were on 9/11.

She looked surprised - and blindsided - as to why he wanted to know that answer. He slouched into his chair, leaning far left onto one elbow, hand propped on his cheek, beady eyes like a crouched snake ready to strike and repeated the question in a smug tone like the Spanish Inquisition, "Just where were you on Christmas Day?" Kagan finally answered, "I guess I was like every other Jew in America, eating Chinese take out." The whole room erupted in laughter.

Sen. Graham had made his point as a conservative so-called Christian: she wasn't in church worshiping Jesus. This man made himself look bad for being so very petty. He also made other Christians look bad.

When you denigrate another person's religion you especially cause others to lose respect for your own religion. Shame on you, Sen. Graham. You are a black eye on the name of Christianity. The whole point of Christianity is to develop love for others. Jesus never said, "Only love those with whom you agree and approve." He just said, "Love." Mr. Graham you have failed that test woefully.

Spies Among Us, Scumbag Congress Denies Food to Children of Unemployed - News Headlines 29 June 2010

*** Spies play games in America and scumbag Congress denies extension of unemployment benefits to desperate jobless in America.

Lucky Gen. McChrystal

From Denny: Gen. McChrystal is toast and was forced to retire. Lucky him that the President is such a decent guy. McChrystal would not have done the same for him if their roles had been reversed. Let's hope the general gets it and appreciates it over the years, not mistaking kindness for weakness.

The President made it possible to override Army regulations and helped McChrystal retire at four star status. Technically, he did not have enough time on the job to quality for retiring at the four star level. The four star level pension sure pays out a helluva lot better than the three star level. He should take this huge gift, shut up and disappear as quickly as he can before the President changes his mind.

Russian spies finally hauled in after FBI watches them for decade

Since I grew up in the American intelligence community I always get a good laugh when "the other side's" spies are found to be operating in our midst. Just like now, usually the FBI and the CIA have had tabs on them for some time. In this case, it's been over a decade of watching these bumbling Russian spies.

The media keeps asking the obvious questions like "They had no direct access to any high level information. What did Russia hope to gain? After all, they could find out all the information they wanted about President Obama's trips by Google search on the internet."

Of course, what the American media is missing is duh, the obvious. The Russian media is state owned and state run propaganda. In a word, the Russian intelligence community does not believe the media to be telling the truth. So, their inept old school handlers wanted these family spies to verify the American media information as truthful or not. The Russian handlers figured if their spies lived in America they would come to relate to and understand the American mindset and know if information was true as told.

This pathetic former Cold War spy ring really comes across as the last gasp of the Old Russia that just couldn't let go of their paranoid ways. These guys always were the ultimate control freaks so none of this surprises me. In the end, it all comes down to trust, of which the Russians have none. That's how their society has worked for decades, on fear and mistrust. In their minds, surely nothing could be as simple as doing a Google search. Earth to Russia: yes, it is.

OK, I've laughed enough at this one, moving along...

BP oil spill disaster and scummy corporate deeds

Oh, goodie, BP is now taking money out of the claims fund to funnel to their BP gas station owners because of the boycotts against BP. So now BP gas station owners are victims? You have got to be kidding me. BP should be paying them out of another fund and not the one for the fishermen and other business owners. Yet more scummy doings from the BP crowd.

As it is, they play games with the claims process even after Ken Feinberg got involved. Everything they do is arbitrary and delay, delay, delay for as long as they can until they get caught and profiled on some news story. Then they go into public relations over drive and churn out the glossy expensive New York ads to the tune of "me thinks thou dost protest too much."

Car sales plummet do to job loss

GM auto sales nosedived by 13 percent from last year when they were in the tubes. That is what happens when you take taxpayer stimulus money, claim to pay it back but actually just took another form of a taxpayer loan from the Federal Reserve, and then had the audacity to fire 5,000 employees. They sent those jobs overseas so obviously they still needed the work to be done. They were just too cheap to pay American workers. And these guys still think American's owe them brand loyalty? What drugs are they smoking?

Unemployment benefits denied by Congress who goes on holiday

The biggest shocker this week was Congress refusing to extend unemployment benefits to the millions of desperate people out there. Bankruptcies are way up as are home foreclosures. You can't keep squeezing people and the politicians think they will not pay some kind of price for their cruelty.

The American public is in an ugly mood and no longer mollified by inspiring words of hope or empty words about how this denial is good for the deficit. Try telling that to a hungry three year old crying because she can only eat one meal a day. Yeah, this is the same Congress that took away breakfast and lunch at America's public schools. Talk about people who will be burning in hell for eternity for such depraved indifference to the suffering of little children.

McChrystal as Dems Political Disaster - News Headlines - 22 June 2010

*** President Obama may face rage of American voters come November and end up with a Republican Congress. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse: it can.

From Denny: General McChrystal is burned toast politically and career wise. What kind of military fool has his own public relations team and then allows a reporter to follow him around non-stop for two months? That reporter was privy to sensitive information as well as the day to day operations, opinions and sound-offs from the general's staff. In a word: McChrystal was not wise.

Which might explain some of the idiot field decisions he has made of late. But then the guy is known as an alcoholic. Recently, he ordered a small group of men into a geographic area that could only be described as a killing zone. They were ordered to build an outpost on a valley with high mountains, known to contain hundreds of shooting Taliban. It's like saying, hey! Now go build your nice new house while under sniper fire by a team of 200 enemy. This was McChrystal's decision and it cost nine of our soldiers their lives. It was a stupid thoughtless decision and completely unnecessary.

Never place alcoholics in charge of any decisions because they will always be unwise. Bush and Cheney were both alcoholics. Who could forget the so-called pretzel-choking incident of Bush when he fell off the couch drunk and slammed his face? Our military and political sphere is awash in alcoholics unable to make sound decisions.

Meanwhile, the Democrats keep getting lousy political advise from the senior advisors at the White House. In a word, Mr. President, your political advisors make you look the fool to the American people. You only have a measly four months to turn your presidency around or its toast come November elections. The middle class is slammed so hard up against the wall that we are pancaked.

Your advisors keep telling you to wait until your second term to make the important changes. Your advisors live in fear that Big Business will not fund their political efforts. Let me share a thought with you. There will be no second term at the rate you are not moving. Your so-called changes move at the rate of the equivalent of snail mail.

If you don't get up off the couch, quit listening to Axelrod and crowd who advance this lukewarm agenda of The Minimum Acceptable, your presidency will get neutered by a Republican Congress in November. It doesn't look good right now, Mr. President. Follow your own gut instincts and quit relying upon those of political advisors who are advancing their own agendas and don't care about anyone outside of themselves. Quit allowing them to mollify you. Quit allowing them to sideline you from doing what you know is right and needs immediate attention: the American people.

BP Problems: Political Cartoons 19 June 2010

*** BP just keeps on giving freebies to the cartoonists.

From Denny: BP's CEO Tony Hayward just can't get it right. He is the man of the hour for the most gaffes ever by a CEO. He makes gaffe prone politicians look articulate. Just this weekend he went back to Britain after making a mockery of the American Congressional hearing. Hayward was seen yacht racing while doing the minimum acceptable to clean up the gargantuan oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that is now gushing at the rate of 4 million gallons a day.

He plans to try again to re-cut the riser pipe for a cleaner cut. The last time BP cut the riser pipe the volume of oil gushing out doubled in volume. Do we really need BP to continue to monkey with this oil well? All these measures are supposed to be temporary solutions anyway until the relief wells are drilled.

The sad thing is that relief wells may no longer be a solution with the way BP has continued to screw with the well head, each time making matters worse. The well is about shot to pieces and we are about to have the ocean floor erupt into one wide space of oil gushing non-stop. Why does the President allow this bumbling idiot to make any suggestions, decisions or act on this well any more? It's insanity.

Obamas Oval Office Speech, CEO Weigh in on Obama, Reality of BPs $20 Billion Escrow - News Headlines 16 June 2010

*** Hold on to your hats getting happy about this $20 billion from BP. They have some tricks up their sleeves to avoid paying it out in a timely fashion.

From Denny: When we all first heard the President strong-armed BP into putting up $20 billion into an escrow account to be handled by a third party for the claims process, many thought that was the end of it. The reality is that BP has claimed to agree to it. The reality is that BP is not fully funding the escrow account with the full $20 billion any time soon. What they supposedly agreed to is to fund the account over four years, $5 billion at a time.

What that says to the Gulf Coast is don't go looking for any money from these guys. The details are still in the shadows as to when the first $5 billion will fill the coffers for the claims necessary today and from the past 60 days. We all know this disaster in the Gulf is going to cost a lot more than $20 billion, especially if BP is unsuccessful in shutting down this well for another eight months to a year. Yeah, it could take that long is yet another harsh reality.

Former GE CEO, Jack Welch, weighed in on Prez Obama's performance. While he was his usual obnoxious self he did have a salient point. The White House folks are behaving like finger-pointing politicians instead of problem-solving business men. There's the rub that's true. If the President's political handlers could grow some stones to stand up against Big Business - and grow some empathetic hearts for the people harmed by all this - they would prove to be more successful and timely in their responses. In short, the President needs a new political team.

The President needs a new team of advisors that understand what it is to not be so comfortable and have been through hard times. Find them, Mr. President. It isn't a difficult task. Over 80 percent of this country is middle class and suffering. Tap any one of them.

There is a reason why former President John Kennedy used to elude the Secret Service and sneak out of the White House to go talk to regular people outside the Beltway mindset. Kennedy ignored his handlers. Kennedy ignored the Washington demands on his thoughts. Kennedy went to the people. Kennedy was successful and has an enduring legacy in the hearts of the people.

Here is the transcript of the President's address in its entirety delivered on 15 June 2010:

Remarks by the President to the Nation on the BP Oil Spill

Oval Office

8:01 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Good evening. As we speak, our nation faces a multitude of challenges. At home, our top priority is to recover and rebuild from a recession that has touched the lives of nearly every American. Abroad, our brave men and women in uniform are taking the fight to al Qaeda wherever it exists. And tonight, I’ve returned from a trip to the Gulf Coast to speak with you about the battle we’re waging against an oil spill that is assaulting our shores and our citizens.

On April 20th, an explosion ripped through BP Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, about 40 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Eleven workers lost their lives. Seventeen others were injured. And soon, nearly a mile beneath the surface of the ocean, oil began spewing into the water.

Because there has never been a leak this size at this depth, stopping it has tested the limits of human technology. That’s why just after the rig sank, I assembled a team of our nation’s best scientists and engineers to tackle this challenge -- a team led by Dr. Steven Chu, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and our nation’s Secretary of Energy. Scientists at our national labs and experts from academia and other oil companies have also provided ideas and advice.

As a result of these efforts, we’ve directed BP to mobilize additional equipment and technology. And in the coming weeks and days, these efforts should capture up to 90 percent of the oil leaking out of the well. This is until the company finishes drilling a relief well later in the summer that’s expected to stop the leak completely.

Already, this oil spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced. And unlike an earthquake or a hurricane, it’s not a single event that does its damage in a matter of minutes or days. The millions of gallons of oil that have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico are more like an epidemic, one that we will be fighting for months and even years.

But make no mistake: We will fight this spill with everything we’ve got for as long as it takes. We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused. And we will do whatever’s necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy.

Tonight I’d like to lay out for you what our battle plan is going forward: what we’re doing to clean up the oil, what we’re doing to help our neighbors in the Gulf, and what we’re doing to make sure that a catastrophe like this never happens again.

First, the cleanup. From the very beginning of this crisis, the federal government has been in charge of the largest environmental cleanup effort in our nation’s history -- an effort led by Admiral Thad Allen, who has almost 40 years of experience responding to disasters. We now have nearly 30,000 personnel who are working across four states to contain and clean up the oil. Thousands of ships and other vessels are responding in the Gulf. And I’ve authorized the deployment of over 17,000 National Guard members along the coast. These servicemen and women are ready to help stop the oil from coming ashore, they’re ready to help clean the beaches, train response workers, or even help with processing claims -- and I urge the governors in the affected states to activate these troops as soon as possible.

Because of our efforts, millions of gallons of oil have already been removed from the water through burning, skimming and other collection methods. Over five and a half million feet of boom has been laid across the water to block and absorb the approaching oil. We’ve approved the construction of new barrier islands in Louisiana to try to stop the oil before it reaches the shore, and we’re working with Alabama, Mississippi and Florida to implement creative approaches to their unique coastlines.

As the cleanup continues, we will offer whatever additional resources and assistance our coastal states may need. Now, a mobilization of this speed and magnitude will never be perfect, and new challenges will always arise. I saw and heard evidence of that during this trip. So if something isn’t working, we want to hear about it. If there are problems in the operation, we will fix them.

But we have to recognize that despite our best efforts, oil has already caused damage to our coastline and its wildlife. And sadly, no matter how effective our response is, there will be more oil and more damage before this siege is done. That’s why the second thing we’re focused on is the recovery and restoration of the Gulf Coast.

You know, for generations, men and women who call this region home have made their living from the water. That living is now in jeopardy. I’ve talked to shrimpers and fishermen who don’t know how they’re going to support their families this year. I’ve seen empty docks and restaurants with fewer customers -– even in areas where the beaches are not yet affected. I’ve talked to owners of shops and hotels who wonder when the tourists might start coming back. The sadness and the anger they feel is not just about the money they’ve lost. It’s about a wrenching anxiety that their way of life may be lost.

I refuse to let that happen. Tomorrow, I will meet with the chairman of BP and inform him that he is to set aside whatever resources are required to compensate the workers and business owners who have been harmed as a result of his company’s recklessness. And this fund will not be controlled by BP. In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must and will be administered by an independent third party.

Beyond compensating the people of the Gulf in the short term, it’s also clear we need a long-term plan to restore the unique beauty and bounty of this region. The oil spill represents just the latest blow to a place that’s already suffered multiple economic disasters and decades of environmental degradation that has led to disappearing wetlands and habitats. And the region still hasn’t recovered from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. That’s why we must make a commitment to the Gulf Coast that goes beyond responding to the crisis of the moment.

I make that commitment tonight. Earlier, I asked Ray Mabus, the Secretary of the Navy, who is also a former governor of Mississippi and a son of the Gulf Coast, to develop a long-term Gulf Coast Restoration Plan as soon as possible. The plan will be designed by states, local communities, tribes, fishermen, businesses, conservationists and other Gulf residents. And BP will pay for the impact this spill has had on the region.

The third part of our response plan is the steps we’re taking to ensure that a disaster like this does not happen again. A few months ago, I approved a proposal to consider new, limited offshore drilling under the assurance that it would be absolutely safe –- that the proper technology would be in place and the necessary precautions would be taken.

That obviously was not the case in the Deepwater Horizon rig, and I want to know why. The American people deserve to know why. The families I met with last week who lost their loved ones in the explosion -- these families deserve to know why. And so I’ve established a National Commission to understand the causes of this disaster and offer recommendations on what additional safety and environmental standards we need to put in place. Already, I’ve issued a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling. I know this creates difficulty for the people who work on these rigs, but for the sake of their safety, and for the sake of the entire region, we need to know the facts before we allow deepwater drilling to continue. And while I urge the Commission to complete its work as quickly as possible, I expect them to do that work thoroughly and impartially.

One place we’ve already begun to take action is at the agency in charge of regulating drilling and issuing permits, known as the Minerals Management Service. Over the last decade, this agency has become emblematic of a failed philosophy that views all regulation with hostility -- a philosophy that says corporations should be allowed to play by their own rules and police themselves. At this agency, industry insiders were put in charge of industry oversight. Oil companies showered regulators with gifts and favors, and were essentially allowed to conduct their own safety inspections and write their own regulations.

When Ken Salazar became my Secretary of the Interior, one of his very first acts was to clean up the worst of the corruption at this agency. But it’s now clear that the problem there ran much deeper, and the pace of reform was just too slow. And so Secretary Salazar and I are bringing in new leadership at the agency -- Michael Bromwich, who was a tough federal prosecutor and Inspector General. And his charge over the next few months is to build an organization that acts as the oil industry’s watchdog -- not its partner.

So one of the lessons we’ve learned from this spill is that we need better regulations, better safety standards, and better enforcement when it comes to offshore drilling. But a larger lesson is that no matter how much we improve our regulation of the industry, drilling for oil these days entails greater risk. After all, oil is a finite resource. We consume more than 20 percent of the world’s oil, but have less than 2 percent of the world’s oil reserves. And that’s part of the reason oil companies are drilling a mile beneath the surface of the ocean -- because we’re running out of places to drill on land and in shallow water.

For decades, we have known the days of cheap and easily accessible oil were numbered. For decades, we’ve talked and talked about the need to end America’s century-long addiction to fossil fuels. And for decades, we have failed to act with the sense of urgency that this challenge requires. Time and again, the path forward has been blocked -- not only by oil industry lobbyists, but also by a lack of political courage and candor.

The consequences of our inaction are now in plain sight. Countries like China are investing in clean energy jobs and industries that should be right here in America. Each day, we send nearly $1 billion of our wealth to foreign countries for their oil. And today, as we look to the Gulf, we see an entire way of life being threatened by a menacing cloud of black crude.

We cannot consign our children to this future. The tragedy unfolding on our coast is the most painful and powerful reminder yet that the time to embrace a clean energy future is now. Now is the moment for this generation to embark on a national mission to unleash America’s innovation and seize control of our own destiny.

This is not some distant vision for America. The transition away from fossil fuels is going to take some time, but over the last year and a half, we’ve already taken unprecedented action to jumpstart the clean energy industry. As we speak, old factories are reopening to produce wind turbines, people are going back to work installing energy-efficient windows, and small businesses are making solar panels. Consumers are buying more efficient cars and trucks, and families are making their homes more energy-efficient. Scientists and researchers are discovering clean energy technologies that someday will lead to entire new industries.

Each of us has a part to play in a new future that will benefit all of us. As we recover from this recession, the transition to clean energy has the potential to grow our economy and create millions of jobs -– but only if we accelerate that transition. Only if we seize the moment. And only if we rally together and act as one nation –- workers and entrepreneurs; scientists and citizens; the public and private sectors.
When I was a candidate for this office, I laid out a set of principles that would move our country towards energy independence. Last year, the House of Representatives acted on these principles by passing a strong and comprehensive energy and climate bill –- a bill that finally makes clean energy the profitable kind of energy for America’s businesses.

Now, there are costs associated with this transition. And there are some who believe that we can’t afford those costs right now. I say we can’t afford not to change how we produce and use energy -– because the long-term costs to our economy, our national security, and our environment are far greater.

So I’m happy to look at other ideas and approaches from either party -– as long they seriously tackle our addiction to fossil fuels. Some have suggested raising efficiency standards in our buildings like we did in our cars and trucks. Some believe we should set standards to ensure that more of our electricity comes from wind and solar power. Others wonder why the energy industry only spends a fraction of what the high-tech industry does on research and development -– and want to rapidly boost our investments in such research and development.

All of these approaches have merit, and deserve a fair hearing in the months ahead. But the one approach I will not accept is inaction. The one answer I will not settle for is the idea that this challenge is somehow too big and too difficult to meet. You know, the same thing was said about our ability to produce enough planes and tanks in World War II. The same thing was said about our ability to harness the science and technology to land a man safely on the surface of the moon. And yet, time and again, we have refused to settle for the paltry limits of conventional wisdom. Instead, what has defined us as a nation since our founding is the capacity to shape our destiny -– our determination to fight for the America we want for our children. Even if we’re unsure exactly what that looks like. Even if we don’t yet know precisely how we’re going to get there. We know we’ll get there.

It’s a faith in the future that sustains us as a people. It is that same faith that sustains our neighbors in the Gulf right now.

Each year, at the beginning of shrimping season, the region’s fishermen take part in a tradition that was brought to America long ago by fishing immigrants from Europe. It’s called “The Blessing of the Fleet,” and today it’s a celebration where clergy from different religions gather to say a prayer for the safety and success of the men and women who will soon head out to sea -– some for weeks at a time.
The ceremony goes on in good times and in bad. It took place after Katrina, and it took place a few weeks ago –- at the beginning of the most difficult season these fishermen have ever faced.

And still, they came and they prayed. For as a priest and former fisherman once said of the tradition, “The blessing is not that God has promised to remove all obstacles and dangers. The blessing is that He is with us always,” a blessing that’s granted “even in the midst of the storm.”

The oil spill is not the last crisis America will face. This nation has known hard times before and we will surely know them again. What sees us through -– what has always seen us through –- is our strength, our resilience, and our unyielding faith that something better awaits us if we summon the courage to reach for it.

Tonight, we pray for that courage. We pray for the people of the Gulf. And we pray that a hand may guide us through the storm towards a brighter day. Thank you, God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.

BP Nightmare Well, Congress Ready to Nail BP, Kennedy FBI Docs, Obama Gets Oil Spill Help - News Headlines 14 June 2010

*** Assassination attempts on Ted Kennedy recorded by the FBI. Congress gets ready to nail BP to the wall this week in hearings. Get a front row seat as it will be rich political theatre.

From Denny: Well it took long enough, finally President Obama decided to accept help from other countries who had the equipment for oil spill clean up. He waited over a month before finally admitting he needed help. If it had not been for the outcry of rage from Gulf Coast residents it does make me wonder if he would still be dithering about that decision while BP slithered off to avoid responsibility.

To date here is what has been accepted from other countries who offered their help:

Mexico - skimmers
Canada - boom
The Netherlands - three sets of Koseq sweeping arms, which attach to the sides of ships and gather oil
Norway - eight skimming systems

Meanwhile, Obama, ever the detail guy, has finished his picks for the Oil Spill Panel Commission. They will probably be much like other political commissions of the past: not shed much light, waste taxpayers' money needed elsewhere and arrive at a split decision, split down political party lines.

Congress is getting ready for some political grand-standing this week as they prepare to roast, toast and bottle for next century's vintage one BP CEO by the name of Tony Hayward who has commandeered this oil spill liar's mess. Maybe it will even be entertaining. The real question is, "So, what do they hope to accomplish?" They will nail his lying weasel hide to the wall. That's nice if you are the retribution type but meanwhile, the Gulf is literally cooking in oil.

The point of truth here is that BP rammed the drilling of the well, hoping to make it in only 51 days. Remember they were drilling on the ocean floor and went beyond the legal depth of 18,000 feet they were allowed. They did it anyway. They also spent $98 million doing it. It cost $1 million every two days to lease the rig. Because the BP rig was 43 days late for their next job, they rushed up this one. One of their risks that did not play out well was choosing "a cheaper well casing over a safer option that would have cost $7 to $10 million more."

Greed. Not much ever changes. Speaking of greed and immense wealth, apparently, Afghanistan has been found to be rich in minerals to the tune of $1 trillion. The good news is maybe America can find a way to connect the country for trade and help spur economic development. How nice it would be to rid the world of the heroin trade and the Taliban terrorists. Keep your fingers crossed for good things in this part of the world so destitute and miserable. This country's residents could use a break.

Obama Names 5 to Oil Spill Panel Commission

Dems Get Ready to Hammer BP - let's hope this week's Congressional hearings where BP CEO Tony Hayward testifies is more than just empty political rhetoric and wrist-slapping for Big Business.

"The committee will ask BP about five crucial decisions it made:

* the decision to use a well design with few barriers to gas flow;

* the failure to use a sufficient number of "centralizers" to prevent channeling during the cement process;

* the failure to run a cement bond log to evaluate the effectiveness of the cement job;

* the failure to circulate potentially gas-bearing drilling muds out of the well;

* and the failure to secure the wellhead with a lock down sleeve before allowing pressure on the seal from below.
