Hate Groups On the Rampage, Big Banks Skirting the Law - Headlines 29 Mar 2010

From Denny: Two things are in play in today's culture. Hate groups are on the rise because of hate speech by the Republicans promoting fear, anger and action. Sarah Palin publishes "cross hairs" diagrams like on a sniper rifle for Democratic politicians she "wants taken out" of Congress. Well, a message like that is irresponsible and dangerous to weak minds.

Obviously, there are a lot of weak minds out there, easily influenced by Palin and Limbaugh to do criminal acts. There are actually militia groups that call themselves Christian. That's like Islamic terrorist groups calling themselves holy to God. It's all insanity and innocent people end up paying for it with their lives while these vicious people are allowed to attack, whether it's on the airwaves or with a gun.

The second message in play is Big Banks and Big Business are telling the government and Americans that they are above the law. The news story and video here will anger you with their audacity of arrogance. While it does not surprise me that Big Banks are doing despicable things to their customers like denying mortgage restructuring along with credit card abuses, what does surprise me is the lukewarm response from the Obama administration to bear down on Big Business and force them to comply with the law. It's obvious they will not comply with the laws of decency. Quit waiting, Mr. Obama, and act quickly on the behalf of the American people who need you so desperately as their champion right now.

Whistle-Blower: Banks Give Homeowners the Runaround: (ABC) A vice president for one of the nation's biggest banks claims customers looking for help in lowering their mortgage payments are often told to call an 800 number -- where he says representatives then give homeowners the runaround...

Of the 1.1 million homeowners who've signed up for the federal program aimed at avoiding foreclosures, only 168,000, or 15 percent, of homeowners have had their mortgages permanently modified.

"In our managers meeting, which can last eight or nine hours, we probably addressed mortgage modifications five minutes or less," the banker said...

Christian Militia Raid: Family of Four Allegedly Behind Plot to Ambush Police: (ABC) A family of four was behind an anti-government militia plot to kill law enforcement officers with improvised explosive devices and projectiles before being foiled by an FBI raid Sunday that netted nine members of a Christian extremist group, federal authorities said today.

David Brian Stone, 45, his wife, Tina Stone, 44, and David Stone's two adult sons allegedly conspired with five other members of the fringe Christian militia group called the Hutaree to kill a Michigan law enforcement officer and then ambush the officer's colleagues who would have gathered for the funeral, according to court documents...

All were indicted by a federal grand jury of seditious conspiracy, attempted use of weapons of mass destruction, teaching the use of explosive materials and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence. They appeared in court this morning but no pleas were made...

Based in Lenawee County, Mich., the Hutaree are described by officials as an extremist group. Their Web site says the name means "Christian warrior" and claims it is preparing to defend itself for the impending arrival of the anti-Christ...

This red-haired European mummie was preserved in the deserts of far western China by first freezing and then baking and then freezing again. It's amazing that she looks as if she had only been buried about 20 years ago - not as long as 4,000 years ago! You can see she had curly eyelashes.

She is part of the Silk Road exhibit the Chinese finally allowed out of their country. Bowers Museum in Orange Country, California, negotiated for decades to receive this exhibit.

Overqualified? Yes, but just happy to have a job: (NBC/New York Times) Don Carroll, a former financial analyst with a master’s degree in business administration from a top university, was clearly overqualified for the job running the claims department for Cartwright International, a small, family-owned moving company here south of Kansas City.

But he had been out of work for six months, and the department badly needed modernization after several decades of benign neglect. It turned out to be a perfect match.

After being hired in December, Mr. Carroll, 31, quickly set about revamping the four-person department, which settles damage claims from moves, and creating tracking tools so the company could better understand its spending...

Sarkozy: ‘The world needs an open America’: (NBC) "The world needs an open America, a generous America, an America that shows the way, an America that listens," he said, calling on the U.S. to champion firm regulations of financial systems, from tax havens to hedge funds...

"Welcome to the club of states who don't turn their back on the sick and the poor," Sarkozy said, referring to the U.S. health care overhaul signed by President Barack Obama last week.

From the European perspective, he said, "when we look at the American debate on reforming health care, it's difficult to believe."

"The very fact that there should have been such a violent debate simply on the fact that the poorest of Americans should not be left out in the streets without a cent to look after them ... is something astonishing to us."

Then to hearty applause, he added: "If you come to France and something happens to you, you won't be asked for your credit card before you're rushed to the hospital."

Health Care Reform Resistance, Funny Political Cartoons - 20 Mar 2010

From Denny: "March Madness" sure is descriptive of the health care reform politics more than the basketball season that was drowned out by all the political cowards and hypocrites. I sure will be glad when the House votes tomorrow whether to pass or fail the health care reform bill. Look at it this way: pass the darned thing and tinker with what's wrong with it later, making adjustments as you go along, finding out what is more needed and what is not.

Included are cartoons both pro and con in regard to the health care reform issue. What I find striking is how those against the reform don't mention the huge fast-rising health care premium costs from the insurance companies. And those excessive Republican ads they are running in my state are complaining about how Obama Care is going to cost the taxpayer $60 million is an outright lie. Those ads are underwritten by the insurance companies, the same guys we pay premiums. Kind of annoying, don't you think? Using our money to produce and run lying ads.

The reality is Obama is saving $60 million by cleaning up Medicare by reducing waste and fraud. Yeah, that's right. The good news is Obama finally put some enforcement teeth into dealing with the fraud. Already, 16,000 companies who scammed the taxpayers during the Bush-Cheney years, have folded shop because they were found out to be shell companies. Now that's the enforcement the public was looking for from the Obama administration. Good government isn't always about throwing wads of money at a problem. Many times it's about being good stewards with that money. To do that you have to actually deal with those who are stealing from the public treasury.

The cartoonists had a good time lampooning both sides of the political aisle, calling it "health care reform resistance." They are still not happy with Israel's obvious peeing dog behavior on Vice President Biden. There is debate in Israel that it was not a smart move as well.

Between the public's high disapproval rating of Congress and the cartoonists' disdain there are a lot of cartoons expressing dissatisfaction. And what about crazy conservative Texas taking over our public school systems? Hard to believe that this one ultra conservative guy who is throwing out regular textbooks in Texas could affect the rest of America.

This so-called conservative revolution is nothing but a grab for money. These same textbooks were pushed and written by the likes of Newt Gingrich who altered the facts to his liking rather than face reality. The sad thing is if we allow this to stand then an entire generation of free-thinking minds go down the black hole into controlled minds for political gain.

Did you hear that Tiger Woods is showing up to play in the Masters? True. Expect those cartoons out the next week or so as I'm sure the cartoonists will have some interesting perspective. :) Take a look at this week's offerings and let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by for a visit!

Fantasy education sponsored by the Republicans:

Conservatives re-write historical fact with their brand of fiction. Read that as Newt Gingrich wrote several of those fantasy factual "textbooks" to pass as educating materials in our public schools. Gingrich and his cronies stand to make a lot of money to their bank accounts once this Texas guy forces lies into the classroom across America.

First it's "throw the bums out" for the politicians. Now it's "throw the bums out" for teachers across America. The average 13 year old American child cannot read but on the third grade level. When did this country become a third world country? Don't worry, Baby Boomer generation. You will have a high-paying job for life plus 70 years at the rate the Republicans have taken apart the public school system. And it's getting worse if we allow The Gingrich Program to advance:

29 Post Roundup at Dennys Blogs 14 Mar 2010

From Denny: Remember me? You know, the woman who was pining away, waiting for Winter to leave and Spring to come? Yeah, well, the past two weeks here in south Louisiana the tree pollen blast has forced me to practically buy stock in the Kleenex brand of nose tissues. :) With all the fun Spring has sprung on my immune system I had to dial it back and was not able to write as many posts. You know that amusing but true proverbial saying of "Politics is so ugly; it's like making sausage"? Writing this past week has not been much prettier. Lucky you that you don't have blogger video cam! :)

I started keeping up with the news headlines over at Dennys Global Politics, partly to go back and write an opinion piece, partly just to see what's out there across the media spectrum. There are mainstream stories along with the obscure you might not have noticed. The stories are excerpted yet provided with links so you can read in more detail if you prefer.

There are many awesome recipes to enjoy, along with the food video tutorials. There are a few poems and spiritual thoughts to consider. There is a science post about just how much the Chilean earthquake affected the planet, pretty scary stuff. And, of course, my total favorites: lots of rocking good humor posts with funny videos I find while checking in with my social sites. What would life be without friends?

Speaker Pelosi Grades the Republicans on Lack of Governing

From Denny: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did her job. She passed almost 300 bills up for approval in the Senate, none of which have been passed. Pelosi lamented it was due to, "delaying tactics of the Republicans in the Senate." The Republicans have used the filibuster tactic more than any time in American history to stonewall efforts needed to help the American people. Republicans continue to guard only the interests of Big Business and their lobbyists in order to keep the campaign money flowing into their coffers.

When asked how to grade her performance as House Speaker much as the President graded his own B+ performance this year, Pelosi responded with "an A for effort." In ABC's "This Week" interview, Speaker Pelosi said, "I think I get an A for effort. And in the House of Representatives, my mark is the mark of our members. We have passed every piece of legislation that is part of the Obama agenda." It's the mark of a good House Speaker to work hand in hand with a President to highlight and push his legislative agenda.

Transcript of this video:

VARGAS: Finally, President Obama, when asked to rate his year in office, gave himself a B plus. How would you rate yourself in the past year?

PELOSI: Well, I have a -- I think I get an A for effort. And in the House of Representatives, my mark is the mark of our members. We have passed every piece of legislation that is part of the Obama agenda. Whether it's the creation of jobs, expanding access to health care, creating new green jobs for the future, regulatory reform, we have passed the full agenda.

VARGAS: Are you frustrated so many bills have not have been stalled in the Senate? Almost 300 bills passed by the House that are sitting languishing in the Senate?

PELOSI: And most of those bills have bipartisan support. Strong bipartisan support in the House that have gone over there. But that you know what that's about? That's about -- and it's very important for you to know, that's about the Republican delay tactics. By requiring 60 votes on some simple legislation that Harry Reid always gets -- has the votes for, but he doesn't have the time to go through the procedural day after day where you have to wait days for the time to go by in order to get the 60 votes. That's how it works in the Senate.

So it's about time. Everything's about time. The most finite commodity that we have. We used our time very well in the House to get an agenda passed in time for it to be considered by the Senate. The delaying tactics of the Republicans in the Senate…

VARGAS: Dare I ask you to grade the Senate?

PELOSI: Well, let's grade this all on a curve. What really matters is, what we do and how it relates to the lives of the American people back to that kitchen table where they have to think about how they make ends meet and how they make the future better for their children and provide for their own retirement. That's really where the grade goes. And the grade is given on election day. We -- we're fully prepared to face the American people with the integrity of what we have put forth, the commitment to jobs and health care and education and a world at peace and safe for our children and with the political armed power to go with it to win those elections.

In an ABC "This Week" interview House Speaker Pelosi commenting about some of the views of the Tea Party movement among Republicans, "We share some of the views of the Tea Partiers in terms of the role of special interest in Washington, D.C. It just has to stop. And that's why I've fought the special interest, whether it's on energy, whether it's on health insurance, whether it's on pharmaceuticals and the rest."

Transcript of this video:

VARGAS: The Tea Party movement, do you think it will be a force to be reckoned with? You had said last summer that it was a faux grassroots movement. You called it the "Astroturf Movement."

PELOSI: In some respects it is.

VARGAS: Is the Tea Party movement a force?

PELOSI: No. What I said at the time is the Republican Party directs a lot of what the Tea Party does - but not everybody in the Tea Party takes direction from the Republican Party. And so there was a lot of, shall we say, Astroturf, as opposed to grassroots.

But, you know, we share some of the views of the Tea Partiers - in terms of the role of special interest in Washington, D.C. It just has to stop. And that's why I've fought the special interest, whether it's on energy, whether it's on health insurance, whether it's on pharmaceuticals and the rest.

VARGAS: So, some common ground with many people in the Tea Party movement.

PELOSI: There are some because, again, some of it is orchestrated from the Republican headquarters. Some of it is hijacking the good intentions of lots of people who share some of our concerns that we have about the role of special interests. Many Tea Partiers - not that I speak for them - share the view, whether it's Democrats, Republicans and Independents - that the recent Supreme Court decision, which greatly empowers the special interests, is something that they oppose.
